Seaweed Commons was built as a commons: open infrastructure for anyone working with seaweed, including those studying it, teaching with it, or documenting it. This pathway collects the tools, data, and resources most useful for academic researchers, educators, science communicators, and policy analysts.

Academic Research
Original scholarly inquiry into seaweed biology, ecology, economics, policy, or material science, typically conducted at universities or research institutes and published in peer-reviewed literature. Seaweed Commons maintains a curated reference library to support this work.
Curriculum Development
The design of educational programs, course content, or teaching materials that incorporate seaweed science, sector knowledge, or blue economy themes. Relevant to marine biology, agri-food technology, environmental studies, and business programs.
Science Communication
Translating seaweed science and sector knowledge for non-specialist audiences through journalism, outreach, documentary, or public education. A critical function in a sector that most Canadians know very little about.
Policy Analysis
Research examining regulatory frameworks, governance structures, and public policy relevant to seaweed aquaculture, wild harvest, food safety, and environmental management. Covers federal and provincial levels and Indigenous co-management frameworks.
Sector Mapping
Systematic documentation of the seaweed sector's participants, value chains, geographic distribution, and economic flows. The kind of work that underpins sector strategy and investment. Seaweed Commons was built partly to fill this gap.
Documentation
Recording practices, knowledge, and stories related to seaweed, including Indigenous harvesting traditions, historical uses, and contemporary practice documentation. Often interdisciplinary and community-based.
Teaching
Using seaweed as a subject, material, or case study in formal or informal educational settings. Applicable from marine biology to business, design, and environmental studies. Seaweed is a productive case because it touches so many disciplines.
