Privacy Policy

Seaweed Commons ("Seaweed Commons," "we," "us," or "our") is operated by Talplay Inc. and runs the website at seaweedcommons.com (the "Site"). This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, how we handle it, and the choices you have. We aim to keep this in plain language rather than legalese.

We handle personal information in accordance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). If you are located in the EU or UK, additional local rights may apply. See "International visitors" below.

1. Who is responsible for your information

The organization responsible for the personal information described here is Talplay Inc. You can reach our privacy contact at naser@talplay.ca.

2. Information we collect

Information you submit for publication. When you submit a profile (for example through our practitioner or builder application forms), we collect the information you provide, which may include your name, location, biography, photographs or other images, website and social links, and a contact email. Profiles are intended to be published publicly on the Site. By submitting, you are asking us to display this information (see our Terms of Use for the rights you grant us).

Information you provide when contacting us or requesting an introduction. If you email us, suggest a listing, or ask to connect with an advisor, we receive whatever information you choose to include.

Information you enter into our tools. The Site offers tools, models, and resources to support your decisions. When you use them, we may receive the information you enter, such as figures, answers, or details about a venture or project. Some tools run in your browser and keep nothing; others save your inputs so you can return to them or so we can provide the feature. Where a tool stores your information, we handle it under this policy.

Venture Workspace information (where applicable). If and when you use the Seaweed Venture Workspace, we collect the account, venture, and organizational information that operators and funders provide in order to create and manage records, together with any billing information required to provide paid services. Additional terms may apply to that service.

Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting and infrastructure automatically log technical data such as IP address, browser type, device information, referring pages, and timestamps. We may also use privacy-conscious analytics to understand aggregate usage of the Site.

Cookies. We use cookies and similar technologies that are necessary for the Site to function (for example, to keep you signed in) and, where used, for analytics. You can control cookies through your browser settings, though disabling some may affect functionality.

3. Why we use your information

We use personal information to:

  • publish and maintain the profiles and listings you submit;
  • operate, secure, and improve the Site and its tools;
  • respond to your enquiries and communicate with you;
  • connect you with advisors when you ask us to;
  • provide and administer the Venture Workspace and any paid services; and
  • meet legal and regulatory obligations.

We rely on your consent for most collection and use. For submitted profiles, publication is the purpose you are consenting to when you submit. You may withdraw consent at any time (see Section 7), subject to legal or contractual limits.

4. Communications

If you ask to receive briefs, updates, or other communications from us, we will send them on the basis of your consent, and every such message will include a way to unsubscribe. We will not add you to a mailing list without your agreement.

5. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information.

We share information only in these circumstances:

  • Publicly, by design. Profile and listing information you submit is displayed publicly on the Site.
  • Advisor introductions. If you ask to connect with an advisor through the Site, we share the information needed to make that introduction with the advisor you choose.
  • Service providers. We use third-party providers to run the Site, including Supabase (database and authentication) and Vercel (hosting and infrastructure), and may use an analytics provider. These providers process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy commitments.
  • Legal reasons. We may disclose information where required by law, or to protect our rights, our users, or the public.
  • Business changes. If the initiative is transferred or restructured, information may be transferred as part of that change, subject to this policy.

6. Where your information is stored

Our infrastructure providers (including Supabase and Vercel) may store and process data on servers located outside Canada, including in the United States. Where that is the case, your information may be subject to the laws of those jurisdictions, including lawful access requests by their authorities. By using the Site, you acknowledge this cross-border processing.

7. Your rights and choices

You may:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you;
  • Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
  • Delete or take down a profile or other information you submitted;
  • Withdraw consent to further use of your information.

To make a request, contact us at naser@talplay.ca. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.

8. Retention

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described here, or as required by law. When you ask us to remove a submitted profile, we will unpublish it and delete the underlying personal information within a reasonable period, except where we must retain limited records for legal or security reasons.

9. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information against loss, misuse, and unauthorized access. No online service can guarantee absolute security, but we work to keep your information safe and to limit access to it.

10. Children

The Site is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us so we can remove it.

11. International visitors

The Site is operated from Canada, and we welcome visitors from anywhere in the world. Whatever country you're in, we apply the protections in this policy to your information, and the rights in Section 7 (access, correction, deletion, and withdrawing consent) are available to everyone.

Some countries and regions give their residents additional rights under local law. For example, if you are in the EU or UK, the GDPR or UK GDPR may give you further rights, such as rectification, restriction, portability, and objection. 12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above, and significant changes will be noted on the Site. Continued use of the Site after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
