A perennial kelp with a central midrib and lateral sporophylls. Closely related to the Atlantic wakame (Alaria esculenta). Commonly co-cultivated with sugar kelp in BC aquaculture operations. Mild, slightly oceanic flavour.

Human food

Mild, slightly oceanic flavour similar to wakame. Used fresh, dried, and in dried flake or sheet form. Well-suited to soups, salads, and Asian-inspired food applications. Often marketed alongside or instead of imported wakame.

Mineral and amino acid profile makes it a useful feed supplement for livestock and aquaculture. Co-harvested with sugar kelp in many BC operations, making it a practical dual-crop for farms.

Cosmetics

Contains fucoidan and alginic acid with applications as a skin-conditioning agent and thickener in skincare formulations. Often processed alongside sugar kelp for cosmetic ingredient supply.
