How product moves today
Most BC seaweed producers, small and coastal, harvest, process, and ship independently. Product typically moves in one of three ways:
- Direct sales at farm gate or local markets
- Dried product shipped by courier or freight
- Fresh product transported on ice by vehicle and ferry to nearby buyers
There is currently no consolidated freight network, shared cold chain, or aggregation hub.
Processing and forms
Because cold-chain logistics are limited, most BC seaweed reaches buyers as dried product: whole leaf, flakes, or powder. Fresh product is harder to move reliably over long distances, which limits the development of fresh food markets.
Drying often happens on farms, and quality can vary significantly between producers. Without shared processing standards, buyers may encounter differences in moisture content, colour, and particle size.

Shared aggregation hubs at ferry terminals
Small, temperature-controlled collection points at key BC Ferries terminals or port facilities could enable coastal producers to consolidate product for onward distribution without each managing their own freight relationships.
Co-operative drying and processing capacity
A shared drying and basic processing facility, potentially mobile or containerised, could serve multiple small producers in a region, enabling consistent product quality and reducing per-producer capital costs.
Integrate with existing coastal freight networks
Several fishing and coastal supply companies already operate refrigerated freight on BC's coast. Integrating seaweed transport into these existing routes could dramatically reduce cold chain costs for small producers.
Direct-to-consumer and farm gate models
For producers near major markets (Salish Sea, Vancouver Island), direct-to-consumer and farmers market channels can bypass the logistics challenge entirely. Some producers already operate successfully this way.
Sector logistics coordinator role
A dedicated logistics coordinator, potentially supported by industry associations, could develop shared freight contracts, negotiate ferry rates, and provide booking and compliance support to small producers.
Dry product as logistics simplifier
Investing in better on-farm drying infrastructure reduces logistics complexity significantly: dried product can move ambient freight, has longer shelf life, and can be consolidated easily. Priority for remote producers.
